Above Ground Pool Pumps: Keeping Your Pool Clean And Safe

After a long winter, one of the most eagerly anticipated activities many people have been dreaming about during months of cold, snowy weather, is taking a nice relaxing swim. If you're lucky enough to have a pool of your very own, you may also be excited about inviting friends and family over for some summertime fun. Above ground pools have become less and less expensive over the years, so more and more people are able to afford them. However, when you have one of these plastic ponds above the ground, you must take care of it properly. Having the right pump is very important. Above ground pool pumps are necessary to filter water.

The pump keeps the water circulating.

This is extremely important if you don't want gross stuff to start growing in the pool. They suck water into a filter, which removes bugs, lint from swimming suits, hair and various other kinds of debris. A pump, whether it's being used in a private or public pool must produce between five hundred and two thousand watts. The smaller your pool, the less wattage you will need because the less water there will be to filter.

Not only does a pump help to keep the water filtered automatically, it also helps to distribute the chemicals that are needed to keep the water clean and free from bacteria. There are many kinds available for many kinds of different pools. Using the one that was designed for your specific kind of pool is advisable. Some are made with two speeds, some are made with several speeds that can be adjusted depending on how much power is needed at any given time.

Pools that are not buried in the earth, require a different kind of pump.

Above the ground ones usually have a pump with a skimmer attached. The skimmer hose goes to the pump, and another hose goes from the pump to the filter. When water has been filtered, it goes back through yet another hose that's attached to the filter.

Kiddie pools don't use a pump because they are easily dumped out when they get dirty. A depth of more than a couple feet requires a lot more care because there is a lot more water to deal with. You must have a filter and you must have a pump to power that filter. Just like there are many kinds of pumps to choose from, there are also many kinds of filters.

There are sand filters that many people find easy to use. This kind of filter removes bacteria from the water, by forcing it through the grains and back out again. When the filter is full, it lets the pump know and the nastiness is flushed away.

Other filters consist of crushed coral-like material. This has a finer grain, but the system is more complex than that of the sand filter. However, this system provides the most sanitary water. You can also use a cartridge that collects debris into itself and can be easily removed for cleaning.

Keeping your watering hole clean is important to the health of everyone who swims in it, but making sure to keep the filter and pump (no matter what kind you use) clean, is also very important. They cannot keep the water clean, if they are not cleaned regularly themselves.

Pentair Quad 80 DE Filter - Dirty

Pentair Quad DE Filters use cartridges rather than grids or fingers. I have a unique type of clay and chalk powder that constantly blows into my pool. Huge amounts year round. I use cellulose media in the DE filter. I can't get it all out of filter by backwashing so I have to open the filter to clean the cartridges. The fiber media mixed with the chalk/clay dust becomes almost like a thick paste. Showing the goo prior to washing the cartridges.

You're actually probably right about it being a problem with the multiport ( the valve on top of the filter). Especially when you admitted to turning it when the pump is running. That's a big no no.
The part you'll probably be replacing is what's called the key stem gasket. Depending on the model of filter it's either glued to the keystem itself or the main body of the multiport, directly under the keystem. I highly doubt it's the spring or your handle would be flopping all over.
The keystem is attached to the multiport handle. It has a channel in it that depending on where you place that handle, opens or shuts channels in the multiport main body. Think of it like a railway turntable that they use to turn trains around. Same idea. If that gasket is shot ( easily done by changing valve positions with the pump running), then water and material will blow past where channel it should go and right back out into the pool.
The gasket itself is fairly cheap for modern filters, around 16-20 bucks but if this is an old jacuzzi iron tank model, expect to lay out 100 bucks. If your filter is a Hayward, it will look like a wagon wheel with a spoke missing. If it's an old jacuzzi it will be square. Some keystem gaskets are actually integral to the keystem itself. You have to buy the whole keystem/gasket and disassemble the spring mechanism, washers and O ring to replace it( takes two people usually), those springs are high tension and you'll need two hands to compress with one person knocking the handle pin in and making sure the handle is oriented right or you'll be on filter when it reads backwash (180 degrees)
If it's a glue in replaceable one ( most Haywards are for example) you'll just need the gasket and also need some proper glue to replace it. Ask the service department in your local pool shop for some. An alternative that I have used is what's called "Goop". Yup...Goop. You can find it in a hardware store in the adhesive section. Try to get the marine grade although household grade will do. It sets really fast and can deal with chlorine as well as making a heck of a bond. It's messy though so you'll be spending the rest of the day pulling it off your fingers. icon smile above ground pool sand filter spitting dirty water back in and filter problems? To get at the keystem just requires the removal of the top screws holding down the top dome. There will be an O ring in there, don't lose it. Also have a look from the top down before you disassemble. You'll see a "bump" in the plastic housing in both top and bottom parts of the multiport. This is for alignment. Those bumps line up. If you don't understand what I'm getting at here, an alternative is to use a grease pencil and place a mark straight down the side of the entire multiport. That way you just line that mark up when you replace the top dome. The dome only goes on one way for your filter to operate in the mode that the label on top says. Get it wrong and while it says you're on filter, you may actually have the internals at the backwash position.

If, when you disassemble the top off the multiport and you find that keystem gasket in good shape with no loose bits or nicks then there's some bad news. Your problem will be the laterals or the standpipe in the tank itself. You'll want a pool tech in for that. The only way to fix that is to empty the tank completely and properly install new laterals and stand pipe, refill with new sand. It's back breaking and it may actually be cheaper to buy a new filter after labor charges are factored in.

By the way..lol, no need for 20 bucks, Keep it and have some beer after you're done the repair. icon smile above ground pool sand filter spitting dirty water back in and filter problems?

Above ground swimming pool plumbing leaks?

Question by Mr Rossi: Above ground swimming pool plumbing leaks?
Hi, I have an above ground pool plus heat pump, filter etc which I have just completed the plumbing on (PVC with PVC cement glue, threads in some places). There is a small leak at the heat pump, just a few drips a minute, but I'm thinking there should be no leaks at all. I've used PTFE tape on the threads and I've tightened by hand as far and it would go, and don't believe I've under or overtightened - however I think it's supposed to go further and perhaps could be a bad thread...?

Anyway, I've used some leak repair tape from Halfords and there's still this slight drip.

Does this matter? I haven't turned on the filter pump yet... should I, and see how it goes? Such a small amount of water leaking won't really affect the pool water volume/flood the plant room etc but I believe you shouldn't let air into the system...

Thanks
Ross
Thanks for the info but I've already tightened a lot with my hands, putting my full weight, to the point I've actually turned the connecting part (which is also screwed on - difficult to explain). Besides, it's a wide connection, my wrench won't fit round it. But might be worth finding a larger one and holding the other one still with another wrench...

Anyway. I tried turning it on. Oh dear. Water sprayed everywhere.

Back to the drawing board.
Looking at Aquafix Wrap Repair (http://www.trickettmarineproducts.co.uk/repair.htm) - anyone any experience with this?

Please don't tell me to 'fix it properly', long story, but there isn't a proper fix available without someone actually making new piping to fit the various different manufacturers different sizes plumbing... that'll teach me to save money by getting different parts from Canada, China and the UK. D'oh.

plastic threads are a pain you need to go hand tight and then use a wrench to finish tightening

How do I open above ground pool with Hayward SP714 filter?

Question by Barb R: How do I open above ground pool with Hayward SP714 filter?
We bought a house with above ground pool (it's a MESS!). We've filled it up, found the instructions for the pump (how to prime, etc) but there are only 2 hoses hanging from the pump. There is a very long hose that has the vacuum attached to it. Is this the 3rd hose to go from pump to pool which detaches from the pump and uses the filter to vacuum?

Please help. I couldn't find instructions on Hayward's website, no instruction manual in the house and the kids are off school TOMORROW and already driving me crazy about the pool!

Answer by Scott M
You should have a hose that goes from the pool to the front of pump. Coming out of the top of the pump should be a fitting connecting to the filter, or maybe a hose. And then another hose that goes from the filter back to the pool.
